Fig. 5.2 This little early spring morning watercolour of a North Yorkshire landscape is painted on Waterford 300gsm Not surface paper in a ring bound 19 × 28cm RKB Fatpad. Despite the variation of greens involved they are all created, using the primary colours and a little help from Raw Sienna and Raw Umber.

Fig. 5.3 Tunisian Fishing Boat – 1. In this instance the shadow side of the boat has been muted by using the various colours’ complement. The blue strip on the boat was quite a light cold blue, slightly greeny and I’ve used Cobalt Blue as the base colour and I’ve deliberately used a little spectral mixing by thinning the wash and adding a smidgeon of Cadmium Lemon as the sun hits it, whilst the shady side has orange added. Similarly, the yellow band has purple added to the shady side and the red on the bottom of the boat has green added to de-saturate and darken the colour.
